Antabuse: is the brand name for the chemical known as disulfiram and is a white to off-white, odorless, and almost tasteless powder, soluble in water, which causes a severe reaction if alcohol is also subsequently consumed. Used in treating alcoholism. Antabuse is prescribed to recovering alcoholics because it induces nausea and vomiting if they drink alcohol while on Antabuse. Its effect is created by interfering with the body’s ability to flush out the byproducts left behind by ethanol alcohol. These byproducts create the unpleasant side effects, and can even cause death in high concentrations.
