Ether

Ether is a clear and highly flammable substance that was previously used as an inhalation anesthetic. The term “ether” originates from the historical use of the chemical compound ether as an anesthetic. Similar to how ether was used in the past to induce a state of unconsciousness, the term now symbolises the initial relief and escape individuals may feel when they first start their recovery process.

However, it is key to note that ether is not a permanent state and it often dissipates over time as people adjust to their new sober lifestyle. It serves as a reminder for individuals that while the initial stages of recovery may feel blissful and exciting, the true challenge lies in maintaining long-term sobriety.

While ether is a commonly used term within the addiction recovery community, it is essential to understand that addiction and recovery are complex issues that require personalised approaches. The term ether is not a scientific or clinical term but rather a metaphorical one used to express a certain emotional state. It is used to remind individuals that recovery is an ongoing process that requires commitment and dedication.

Ether Addiction

Etheromania is a rare addiction involving the inhalation or drinking of diethyl ether, a substance that leads to dependence but doesn’t cause withdrawal symptoms beyond a craving for more ether. In the late 19th century, ether was popularly used as a recreational drug, notably in Ireland where it was seen as an alcohol alternative. Between World War I and II, ether consumption became a significant social issue in Poland, especially in Upper Silesia. It was so widespread that even schoolchildren were regularly using it, leading to concerns about intoxication and safety, particularly in mines due to the fire risk.

Ether was smuggled into Poland mainly from Germany and Czechoslovakia, often using creative methods like specially trained dogs and hidden compartments in vehicles. It was distributed in villages through various means and consumed at designated places known as “kapliczki” or chapels. Drinking ether requires a specific technique to avoid its rapid evaporation and to mix it with water, while inhalation was another method of use to avoid gastric issues, though it provided shorter-lasting effects.

By the 1920s and 1930s, the Polish government recognised the dangers of ether and took legal action to restrict its sale and classify it as a drug, imposing severe penalties for its smuggling, trade and possession. This period saw increased attention from both media and government institutions on combating ether addiction and its consequences.
