Is rehab covered under Prescribed Minimum Benefits?

Yes. South Africa’s Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs) include qualifying hospital-based management of substance dependence, including alcohol dependence. This is why the hospital benefit matters even on plans with limited day-to-day cover.

Must you use a Discovery network rehab provider?

For full cover under the hospital benefit, Discovery’s 2026 guides direct members to network facilities. If you voluntarily choose a facility outside the network, Discovery may pay up to 80% of the Discovery Health Rate (DHR) for the facility account, leaving you responsible for the difference. This is not necessarily 80% of the provider’s invoice, and it is not a fixed rand amount.

Emergencies and situations where an appropriate network provider is unavailable can be treated differently under PMB rules. Before committing to fees, get written confirmation of the funding position for the specific admission. Never assume full cover, and never assume no cover.

What happens before Discovery authorises admission?

A planned admission starts with clinical information from the admitting provider, who assesses whether inpatient care or supervised detoxification is appropriate. Discovery then decides whether the requested admission qualifies and what it will fund.

Before admission, confirm four things in writing:

• The proposed treatment provider.
• The number of days authorised.
• The treatment and services covered.
• Any co-payment or shortfall you would have to fund.

Not automatically. Authorisation for inpatient rehabilitation does not by itself include outpatient counselling, continuing care or a longer residential programme. These require their own benefit assessment. Ask Discovery whether separate plan benefits apply to the follow-up care recommended by the clinician.

Either way, a sound treatment plan addresses what happens after discharge. The treating team should discuss follow-up care, practical support and any private costs before discharge where possible.
