The city of Johannesburg in Gauteng, South Africa.
The city of Johannesburg is located in the province of Gauteng, on the Highveld, which is a plateau in South Africa. Johannesburg has many streams that wind through the suburbs, forming the source of two of southern Africa’s strongest rivers – the Limpopo and the Orange Rivers. Some of these streams, known as “spruits” include the Braamfontein Spruit (“spring of brambles”) and the Jukskei in the north suburbs.
The first white settlers that reached Johannesburg observed the shiny rocks on the ridges due to the drops of water from the streams. This was the reason for the area being named the Witwatersrand, which means “the ridge of white waters”.
All of this available water may be one of the reasons for Johannesburg having one of the largest man-made forests on earth. It is said that the leafy suburbs can be seen from outer space. This makes the suburbs of Johannesburg extremely attractive as roads are lined with Jacaranda trees or oaks.
Johannesburg’s many trees have made it one of the ‘greenest’ cities in the world. There are an estimated six million trees in Joburg and there is now a drive to continue planting trees, particularly in the previously disadvantaged areas of Johannesburg, Gauteng.
The Johannesburg Botanical Garden in Emmarentia and the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden in Roodepoort are beautiful parks to wander through and to unwind if you’re visiting Johannesburg, Gauteng.
