Pharmacology

Pharmacology is the study of how drugs and chemicals affect living beings, aiming to understand everything from how bodies process these substances to the development of new medications for disease prevention and treatment. It plays a crucial role in creating personalised medicine approaches, tailoring treatments to individual patient needs.

Within pharmacology, there are two main areas of focus: pharmacodynamics, which looks at how drugs interact with biological systems, including their physiological and behavioural impacts; and pharmacokinetics, which examines how the body absorbs, distributes, metabolizes and excretes drugs. This information is vital for determining correct drug dosages and understanding potential interactions between different medications.

Pharmacologists build on foundational knowledge in physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology to explore drug actions at various levels, from molecular to whole-body effects. Their work is essential for developing new medications and ensuring the safe, effective use of drugs in therapy.

Pharmacists, who often work in hospitals or retail settings, focus on the practical aspects of preparing, dispensing and advising on the use of medicines. Together, these disciplines contribute to advancing healthcare and improving patient outcomes.

Pharmacology in addiction recovery includes medications can be used to assist you in reducing withdrawal symptoms, managing cravings and preventing relapse. Substance use disorder (SUD) is a chronic illness with a strong genetic and social basis, similar to diabetes or hypertension and often involving relapses. Long-term substance use leads to brain changes that don’t fully reverse post-detox.

Treatment for SUD includes both behaviour therapy and medication with advances in medication over the past 30 years enhancing treatment effectiveness. These medications, which are typically used in conjunction with psychological treatments, have three primary goals: managing withdrawal symptoms, reducing cravings and preventing relapse. Examples include methadone and buprenorphine for easing withdrawal and cravings.

Current medications for addictions fall into three categories: full agonists like methadone (which replace the abused substance), partial agonists like buprenorphine (used for detox and ongoing treatment) and antagonists like naltrexone (which block drug effects). Targeting specific brain receptors affected by addiction, these medications are more effective when combined with psychosocial treatments, working together to decrease substance use and reduce relapse risk.
