Arts and Cultures in Cape Town

Cape Town offers a rich cultural experience to people looking to enjoy music, theatre, art, and architecture.  Live music of almost every genre plays just about every night at various venues (upmarket  and otherwise) including original African Jazz and authentic Irish music as well as traditional South African music.

Street performers will commonly be found in the CBD during the day offering performance art.  You can see them while you tour the Michaelis gallery (on Greenmarket square) or the South African art museum (at the top of Adderley street past the Parliament buildings).  For more mainstream theatre make a booking at the Baxter, Artscape, or one of the smaller theatres that are dotted around Cape Town.

Arguably Cape Town’s best architecture is in the CBD where you’ll find a mixture of old Dutch and colonial English buildings huddling together with contemporary designs such as the Cape Town International Conference Centre.

There are also some superb examples of Art Deco architecture – the ‘old mutual’ building in Cape Towns City Bowl is one example. This building has been turned into fantastic loft apartments with double and triple volume floors, very chic and very expensive.
