Synthetic

Synthetic drugs, man-made substances created in laboratories, are designed to emulate the effects of natural narcotics. These drugs, chemically synthesized to replicate sensations or highs, are often developed to circumvent legal constraints or to achieve specific, sought-after effects.

Among the well-known synthetic drugs are synthetic opioids like fentanyl, which is significantly more potent than heroin. Synthetic cannabinoids, such as Spice or K2, aim to imitate the effects of marijuana. The process of creating these drugs, termed synthesis, involves combining various elements to replicate a drug using more accessible chemicals. In the sphere of addiction, these synthesized substances are frequently referred to as Synthetic drugs or Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS), a major concern in the field of substance abuse.

Synthetic cannabinoids, for instance, are engineered to mimic the effects of cannabis and have been available online since 2004. While they resemble THC, the active component in cannabis, some newer variants do not produce identical effects. These substances are often mixed with solvents and herbs and consumed by smoking or as a tea. Variations in chemical composition can result in different effects from the same batch.

‘Spice’, one of the earliest synthetic cannabinoids, has been followed by numerous others like ‘kronic’, ‘northern lights’ and ‘mojo’. While their effects are similar to cannabis, including euphoria and increased appetite, they can also cause serious health issues such as rapid heart rate, hypertension, vomiting and even life-threatening conditions like psychosis and strokes.

Phenethylamines include substances like amphetamines, MDMA and synthetic hallucinogens such as NBOMes and benzodifurans. These drugs can masquerade as other psychedelics and are available in various forms. Synthetic cathinones, related to the khat plant, are stimulant drugs similar to amphetamines and typically come in powder or crystal form. Tryptamines, found in nature, include substances like DMT and psilocybin. Piperazines, which mimic MDMA’s effects, are often sold under the guise of ‘MDMA’ in pill, capsule or powder forms.

Novel benzodiazepines, marketed as ‘legal benzodiazepines’ or ‘research chemicals’, include unapproved substances or those with unique chemical structures. There’s limited information on their long-term health effects.

Traditional drug screening methods often fail to detect these synthetic substances making them attractive to individuals, particularly young people, who want to avoid drug detection. This difficulty in detection, combined with their evolving nature, positions synthetic drugs as a significant public health issue in drug abuse and addiction.
