Revia, an opioid antagonist medication, is commonly used in addiction treatment to help individuals recovering from opioid addiction. It contains naltrexone, an FDA-approved active ingredient for treating opioid addiction since the 1980s. Revia does not cause addiction or produce a high; instead, it reduces cravings for opioids and blocks their euphoric effects by binding to opioid receptors in the brain. This aids in recovery but it should be part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes counselling. Administered orally once a day, it’s important to follow the prescribed dosing schedule and not to double up on doses if one is missed.

Side Effects

ReVia, a medication used for addiction treatment, can cause serious side effects and requires immediate medical attention for signs of an allergic reaction like hives, difficulty breathing and facial swelling. When used with opioids, it may trigger withdrawal symptoms such as cravings, sweating, fever, stomach issues, watery eyes, nasal congestion, tingling, goosebumps, body aches, shaking, muscle twitching, sleep disturbances and feelings of anxiety or depression. Serious side effects to be aware of include severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, mood changes, hallucinations, depression and suicidal thoughts.

High doses can damage the liver, signaled by symptoms like upper stomach pain, vomiting, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, anxiety, insomnia and muscle or joint pain.

ReVia is not recommended for those allergic to it, currently addicted to or withdrawing from opioids, who have used opioids or certain medications in the past 7-10 days or those with liver failure or active hepatitis. It’s also important to disclose any history of liver or kidney disease to your doctor and discuss if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as ReVia’s effects on an unborn baby or a breastfeeding infant are not fully known. Babies born to opioid-using mothers may face severe withdrawal symptoms needing medical treatment.
