Ball

In street drug culture “ball” is the shortened version of the term “eight ball”, which is used to describe an eighth of an ounce of the drug, usually crystal methamphetamine or cocaine.
However if you’ve been in the addiction recovery community you may have also come across the term “ball” another context, “ball” refers to a method used in addiction treatment, particularly in group therapy settings.

In ball, participants gather in a circle and pass around a small object, such as a ball. Each person holds the ball and has the opportunity to speak freely, sharing their thoughts, experiences or challenges related to addiction and recovery. The ball serves as a symbol of the conversation, creating a safe space where everyone gets a chance to be heard.

During a ball session, participants are encouraged to listen attentively while someone else is speaking and to refrain from interrupting or offering advice. This practice cultivates empathy, active listening and connection among peers. It also provides an opportunity for individuals to express themselves, gain insights and receive support from others who have faced similar struggles.

The use of the term “ball” in addiction treatment may stem from the practice’s resemblance to a ball game. Just as players in a game pass around a ball, participants in the therapy session pass around the symbolic ball, taking turns and engaging with one another.

The ball method is often used as part of a comprehensive addiction recovery program, alongside other therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy, individual counselling and 12-step meetings. It aims to promote open communication, build trust and create a sense of community among those in recovery.

By participating in ball exercises, you’ll have the opportunity to share your experiences, learn from others and develop important skills for maintaining sobriety. The supportive environment created through ball sessions can be empowering, validating and instrumental in your recovery process.

Remember, everyone’s path to recovery is unique and the ball method is just one tool utilised in addiction treatment. The more you engage and actively participate in therapy and group sessions, the more you can benefit from the collective wisdom and support of others who have faced similar challenges.
