Straight

The term “Straight” is commonly used as slang to describe a state of sobriety or a lifestyle free from addictive substances. The term “Straight” gained some notoriety in the 1980s with the controversial Straight Incorporated program, yet it has outlived this specific association. In the broader addiction recovery community, being “Straight” has become a way for individuals to affirm their drug-free status.

Being Called Straight

The term “straight,” traditionally used to denote heterosexual orientation, generally doesn’t spark offense in discussions about sexual orientation or substance abstinence. The dialogue surrounding its use highlights a broad acceptance and the non-offensive nature of the term, pointing to a preference for simplicity over the term “heterosexual.” Concerns about offending individuals are addressed with the understanding that language and personal identification are deeply personal choices.

Historical terms like “bent” used derogatorily towards homosexuals underline the sensitivity around language, yet “straight” remains uncontroversial, emphasising the significance of the intent behind words and the fluid nature of language to adapt to respectful and inclusive communication.

Inquiries about modern etiquette, from how to address holiday cards to same-sex couples to the process of coming out to extended family, reflect the evolving social norms towards greater diversity and inclusion.

Suggestions for sharing one’s sexual orientation with extended family through close family members highlight ways to manage personal disclosures in a respectful manner. The shift towards using gender-neutral pronouns such as “they/them” supports the transgender and gender-queer communities, marking a positive step towards acknowledging diverse gender identities. This conversation on etiquette and identity illustrates an increased awareness and respect for individual preferences and relationships in contemporary society.

Origin Of Straight In Drug Terminlogy

Straight, Incorporated was a drug rehabilitation programme that operated from 1976 to 1993. Despite receiving praise in some circles, the programme faced significant criticism and allegations of abuse. Founded by Mel Sembler, Straight, Inc. adopted a “tough love” approach to therapy, which has been compared to brainwashing. Numerous lawsuits and allegations of mistreatment from former members led to its closure. In the aftermath, many survivors have formed groups to support each other and come to terms with their experiences.

In the 1970s, punk culture was linked with the use of inhalants like model airplane glue for their psychoactive effects. William Tsitsos noted in 1999 that the straight edge movement, which emerged from hardcore punk in the late ’70s and early ’80s, has evolved through three distinct phases since its inception.
