Character Defects

In simple terms, character defects refer to specific personality traits or behaviors that are considered negative or harmful. These flaws can contribute to addictive behaviors and hinder recovery progress. It’s important to understand that everyone possesses character defects to some degree; nobody is perfect. However, addressing and working on these flaws is fundamental for successful recovery.

The concept of character defects has its origins in the Twelve Step program developed by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). It is based on the belief that addiction stems from deep-rooted issues within an individual’s character and emotional well-being. By identifying and addressing these defects, individuals can work towards personal growth and sobriety.

Character defects, in 12 Step addiction recovery language, are those aspects of our personality that we need to continually strive to improve should we wish to remain free from drug and alcohol relapse. Step 6 of the 12 Step recovery program says: “Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character”
This step comes after Step 5 where we explore the ‘exact nature of our wrongs’  and move towards making restitution for harms we caused.

Character defects can take various forms, such as selfishness, impulsivity, dishonesty or resentment. These traits can lead to destructive patterns, strained relationships and relapse. Recognising and accepting these defects is the first step towards change.

To overcome character defects, individuals in addiction recovery often engage in self-reflection and self-inventory. This involves honestly examining their flaws, taking responsibility for their actions and making amends to those they have harmed. Through therapy, support groups and guidance from counsellors, individuals can develop healthier coping mechanisms and improve their overall character.

It’s worth noting that character defects should not be confused with personal shortcomings or weaknesses. Instead, they specifically refer to behaviors and traits that directly contribute to addiction or act as obstacles to recovery.

So, if you’re currently on your recovery process, it’s essential to recognise and address your character defects. Acknowledging and working on these flaws will not only help you overcome addiction but also enhance your personal growth and improve your overall well-being. Remember, nobody is perfect and recovery is a continuous process of self-improvement.
