Remoxy, also known by its generic name, extended-release oxycodone, is a type of medication that belongs to the opioid class. It is mainly prescribed to manage pain in individuals who require around-the-clock treatment. Remoxy was designed by Pain Therapeutics to be a more difficult to misuse version of the opioid pain medication oxycodone. It was formulated for slow, extended release over time, targeting chronic pain rather than short-term pain.
Researchers have been battling the opioid epidemic on multiple fronts and one key area is developing medications that are harder to misuse. This study investigated a novel extended-release oxycodone formulation called REMOXY ER, designed with a unique high-viscosity gel to deter abuse.
The scientists compared REMOXY ER to two existing extended-release oxycodone medications, OxyContin ER and Xtampza ER. They simulated real-world scenarios of how someone might try to misuse these medications, including crushing them for snorting, dissolving them for injection or extracting them for oral ingestion in various liquids.
The results were promising. REMOXY ER significantly hindered all these attempted abuse methods. Compared to the other medications, REMOXY ER released a much smaller percentage of oxycodone in simulated snorting and oral ingestion, regardless of the liquid used. For injection, REMOXY ER barely released any oxycodone, even with heat, while the other medications readily released significant amounts.
These findings suggest that REMOXY ER’s high-viscosity gel technology offers a more robust defense against abuse compared to existing options. While this is a positive step, the researchers acknowledge that the fight against the opioid crisis requires continued innovation in abuse-deterrent technology.
This study highlights the potential of REMOXY ER as a potentially valuable tool in the ongoing battle against opioid misuse. However, it’s important to remember that these are lab simulations and real-world behaviour may differ. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and explore the long-term impact of REMOXY ER on opioid abuse patterns.
Although intended for prescription use with doctor supervision, Remoxy never gained FDA approval in the United States. The FDA panel in 2018 raised concerns about its effectiveness in deterring abuse, ultimately rejecting its application.
