The Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000 (DATA-2000) is an US law that makes it permissible for doctors to recommend and use buprenorphine in opioid addiction treatment.
The law also restricts doctors to only treating 30 patients in their first year and a limit of 100 patients per year after that.

Before DATA-2000, the medications used to treat opioid addiction, such as methadone, could only be administered in specialised clinics. This limited access to treatment and often resulted in long waiting lists making it challenging for individuals seeking help to get the care they needed.

Under DATA-2000, physicians who meet certain criteria can obtain a waiver to prescribe approved medications like buprenorphine, which is an effective medication for opioid addiction. These medications, when combined with counselling and support, help individuals manage cravings, reduce withdrawal symptoms and ultimately overcome their addiction.

The goal of DATA-2000 is to increase access to treatment for opioid addiction and provide a more patient-centered approach. By allowing doctors to prescribe these medications in their own practices, it gives individuals the opportunity to seek help from a familiar healthcare provider making the process more comfortable and less stigmatised.

To obtain the waiver, physicians must complete an approved training course and meet certain qualifications. Once qualified, they can prescribe these medications to their patients, helping them on their path to recovery.

In addition to increasing access to treatment, DATA-2000 has also helped reduce stigma surrounding addiction. By integrating addiction treatment into mainstream healthcare, it acknowledges addiction as a medical condition that can be effectively managed rather than a moral failing.

Since the enactment of DATA-2000, the number of physicians obtaining waivers to prescribe medications for opioid addiction has increased significantly, expanding the availability of treatment options across the country.

It is key to note that DATA-2000 is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to addiction treatment. Comprehensive care, including counselling, behavioural therapy and support groups, is essential for successful recovery. However, it has played a critical role in improving access to medications that can help individuals overcome their addiction.
