Have you ever asked yourself why do people drink alcohol? I mean, some find that it tastes horrible, while others just don’t see the point in drinking something that can make you act and think differently.
Whatever the reasoning behind it, alcohol is widely accepted in society. This is probably also why it’s so dangerous.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that alcohol abuse causes about 2.5 million deaths each year. Not only that, one of the world’s leading medical journals, the Lancet, says that alcohol is more dangerous that heroin and crack cocaine!
Now, I’m no rocket scientist but surely these statistics must mean something? Why do people still drink alcohol even though it’s so dangerous?
“Alcohol Relaxes Me…”
Some people drink alcohol to relieve stress they have in their lives. It temporarily helps them forget about problems at work, at home or even academically.
The sad and ironic thing about this is that by drinking alcohol, they only make their problems worse and increases their chances of becoming an alcoholic!
“Because My Friends Drink…”
Sometimes, one of the only reasons why people drink alcohol is because those around them are drinking. I mean, nobody wants to feel like the odd one out!
For example, you feel obliged to drink after a soccer match because the whole team is celebrating or your co-workers are having a teambuilding session at the local bar.
“Drinking is Fun!”
Some people drink because it makes them feel happy and livelier than what they usually are. In fact, people who feel uncomfortable in social situations drink to make them part of the crowd.
“I’m Braver When I Drink…”
Alcohol has the ability to make people lose their inhibitions. They feel more courageous and fearless which helps them to do things outside of their comfort zone.
“It Seems Interesting…”
This applies mostly to children, teenagers and young adults. They want to know what alcohol tastes like or how it feels to be drunk.
“I Drink Alcohol Because I Want To…”
Sometimes, people drink alcohol purely because they enjoy the taste. In fact, when they are thirsty, they’ll choose to have a beer or a glass of wine over water or any other non-alcoholic beverage.
“I Drink Alcohol Because It’s Available…”
Some people just drink alcohol because it’s there and ready to use. They might not go out of their way and get alcohol but because it’s in their presence each day, they drink it.
