An alcohol rehab is a centre that offers treatment for the brain disease of alcoholism. Clients will receive psychological therapy and addiction counselling, and follow a 12 Step programme. They will often require a detox which is also offered at most leading alcohol rehabs.

Alcohol rehab is short for alcohol rehabilitation. Alcohol rehab refers to the treatment of alcoholism and it is usually administered within a residential psychological treatment centre which teaches the formerly active alcoholic how to interact with others and live their life without the need to drink alcohol.

There are several forms of alcohol rehabilitation facilities, and the most common is known as facilitating the 12 step programme of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).

Research has shown that for serious addictions residential rehab programmes with a treatment length of around 90 days provides a better long term success rate than community or day based rehab treatment, although ongoing counselling or aftercare is a crucial service provided by many residential rehab centres.

Alcohol rehab programmes vary in length from about four weeks up to nine months, and most will provide patients with alcoholic detoxification regimes at the start of the programme if needed.
