Opana

Oxymorphone is an opioid medication prescribed for severe pain that hasn’t responded to other treatments or when other medicines are not tolerated. It works by acting on the central nervous system to alleviate pain but it can cause side effects due to its action in the CNS. Long-term use may lead to dependence, though the risk of addiction is low when used as prescribed for pain. Withdrawal symptoms can be minimised by gradually decreasing the dose. Oxymorphone is regulated under the Opioid Analgesic REMS program to mitigate risks and is available in extended-release tablets. Decisions to use oxymorphone involve considering potential risks, including allergies and the patient’s medical history. While no pediatric-specific studies have been conducted, it’s not shown geriatric-specific issues but may require dose adjustments in elderly patients due to possible side effects and organ function decline. The effects of oxymorphone during breastfeeding are unclear, so risks and benefits should be carefully weighed.

Historically, Opana was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1959 but it has undergone several modifications since then. The most significant change occurred in 2010 when Endo Pharmaceuticals reformulated Opana. The company aimed to create a version that was more difficult to abuse by crushing or dissolving for injection. Despite this effort, individuals still found ways to misuse the drug, contributing to the ongoing opioid crisis.

Like other opioids, Opana can be highly addictive. It binds to certain receptors in the brain, producing pain relief and feelings of euphoria. Over time, a person may develop a tolerance, requiring higher doses to achieve the desired effects. Unfortunately, this can lead to dependence and addiction.

Many individuals seeking treatment for Opana addiction often benefit from an approach that includes medical detoxification and therapy. Treatment aims to address both the physical and psychological aspects of addiction to help individuals regain control of their lives.
