Addiction Interventions

Addicts often live in a state of denial regarding their illness. They make every excuse under the sun to justify or explain their drug use.

Drug dependency is such an insidious illness that people with addiction are unable to realize that they need professional help. Addiction treatment might not be the only way to get clean, but drug rehab certainly is the safest and most reliable way to beat addiction. You can’t beat this illness alone.

The cycle of addiction becomes so consuming that it might seem that all hope is lost. Don’t despair, however, if the patient is committed to recovery and receives competent addictions treatment he/she has a very good chance of recovering. It doesn’t matter how difficult it might be to be able to find lasting addiction recovery, the journey is still worth it! Think of how miserable your life is while you are using drugs – surely nothing can be harder than that?

Interventions Deconstruct Denial

Denial prevents drug addicts from admitting that they have a problem. They don’t accept the fact that they need to stop using drugs and that they can’t do this alone. Drug treatment isn’t a luxury, it’s a life-saving necessity. So often the loved ones of an addict realize this and desperately struggle to convince the addict to seek help, but to no avail – the addict continues to use despite their pleas, threats, and attempts to reason. Drug addicts need help to even realize that they need help. They can’t shift out of this disease without somebody pushing them.

Because the success of drug rehab rests so heavily on the input of the patient it is very important to ensure that they are willing to put in the effort required to benefit from addictions treatment. Recovery from addiction requires a consistent commitment to following the suggestions of the treatment team. Half-hearted attempts are ineffective at best and can be damaging if the addict loses hope after failing.

Why interventions are needed

This is precisely why an addiction intervention can be so important. This is a step for the family to take to ensure the safety of their loved one. By breaking the addict’s denial with a firm message the family can help the addict to take that important first step into a detox center. Even though it might seem tough at the time an intervention is actually the most loving thing a family can do for an addict. It can mean the difference between life and death in some cases.

An addict can remind “blind” to the problem of addiction until the bitter end. Addiction distorts the way people think and leaves them unable to accept that they have a problem. Addicts are simply being stubborn – they are in the grip of a terrible illness that is depriving them of the ability to think clearly. An addiction intervention is an opportunity to open the eyes of an addict so that he/she can see how drug dependency is ruining his/her life.

Modern science sees addiction as a clinical disease like any other. Just like cancer or diabetes people with addiction do not choose to be sick. Nor can they choose not to be sick. They need a professional clinical intervention in order to regain their health. Drug addiction affects people psychologically and physically. This means that it needs to be treated comprehensively. This is not a disease that will simply go away by itself.

An intervention might seem difficult to arrange and even more difficult to sit through, but if it has the chance of saving a life then surely it is worth attempting? Recovery from addiction starts with a patient admitting the problem and becoming ready to change things. An intervention can help them to reach this point without having to hit “rock bottom”.

There are some “do’s and don’ts” to remember when undertaking an intervention. Perhaps the key to a successful intervention is proper planning with professional support. By having a well thought out plan that is put together with the help of a professional you will have a much better chance of successfully leading the addict to drug rehab.

If you adhere to the recommendations of the interventionist and keep the meeting on track then you will have a good chance of getting your loved one into a safe and supportive drug rehab. If you would like advice on how to stage an intervention please contact us.
