Ambien® is one of the trade names for the medication known as Zolpidem.
It is prescribed as sleeping medication and has similar effects to the benzodiazepine class of drugs. Zolpidem is also sometimes used without prescription by people wanting to counteract the effects of a street drug (like methamphetamine, cocaine, or MDMA).
Zolpidem is associated with drug dependency and tolerance which is usually treated by reducing the dose over several months. Zolpidem can display negative side effects at any dose.
