Alcoholism Symptoms – Part 2

The first part to this Alcoholism Symptoms article is found here.

Alcohol abuse can lead to alcoholism and is by no means healthy. Binge drinkers are sometimes more appropriate for out-patients rehab, otherwise known as after-hour’s rehab.

MYTH: Alcoholics come from alcoholic families.

FACT: While it is true that some alcoholics do come from families where more than one person suffers from the disease of alcoholism, many alcoholics come from family backgrounds where there is no history of alcoholism or drug addiction.

The truth is that each person’s drinking habits differ and to some degree so does alcoholic drinking. Not every alcoholic has exactly the same symptoms but all do have some if not all of the symptoms described above and may exhibit other signs as well. If you’re concerned that yourself or a loved one may be exhibiting alcoholism symptoms these 4 questions will help in determining whether you might have an alcohol problem.

These questions are called “CAGE” – an acronym created from the first letter of important words in each questions.

  • Have you ever felt you should cut down on your drinking?
  • Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
  • Have you ever felt bad or guilty about your drinking?
  • Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning (as an “eye opener”) to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover?

The reality is that the alcoholic drinker may have no idea that he or she is caught in the grip of a debilitating disease; in fact denial is one of its features and is much misunderstood. Confronting an alcoholic can be an intimidating experience so knowing as much as you can about alcoholism symptoms will help you to be more objective and less emotional. It’s important to pick your moment, definitely not when the alcoholic is drunk, and to stay focused on the disease and alcoholism symptoms rather than focus on the personal issues. But above all be honest.
